Monumentality is a key feature of the East. Where this impulse came from, whether it be the Soviet obsession with gigantic buildings, the grandeur of the Eastern Orthodox Church, or something much older, I’m not sure. But some of the most impressive monuments I’ve ever seen, both in scale and creativity, I saw while in the East.
